About six months ago I read a short story in AGNI 67 called “A Time of Exchanges” by a Russian writer named Vladimir Makanin. Although he’s one of Russia’s best known contemporary writers, his work is new to me (and, I suspect, to many other Americans). And since I can’t find any of his stories online, you’re going to have to trust me on this one: GO READ MAKANIN.

I don’t usually share Electric Literature’s Recommended Reading series here (because basically they do what I do on a much larger scale, and chances are you’ve already seen whatever story they’re sharing). But, being a big Mary Gaitskill fan, I couldn’t resist sharing the latest ELRR, an excerpt of her novel-in-progress: “The Devil’s Treasure.”
